Kata Wiseman Koli, a media graduate from Fiji National University (FNU), has shared the personal challenges that shaped his path to earning a Bachelor of Media and Communication. Hailing from Nadi, Koli’s biggest hurdle was adapting to life in Suva, where he lived with relatives while pursuing his studies. He expressed that the transition was difficult, particularly the restrictions he faced in contrast to his life at home.
“Being away from home presented its own challenges. We had to adjust to the expectations of others, which limited our freedom,” Koli remarked, highlighting the sense of independence he missed during this period.
Despite these difficulties, Koli found strength through his faith, attributing his ability to persevere to his spiritual beliefs. “I was just praying to God and committing myself to God and trusting that He would guide me and protect me. God was the only one who helped me overcome these challenges,” he said.
Koli emphasized the importance of practical training provided by FNU in preparing him for the media industry. Currently working as a photographer at The Fiji Times, he completed a six-month attachment at Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), which he credits for significantly enhancing his professional skills.
“My parents serve as my greatest motivation. Their resilience in overcoming challenges inspired me to pursue my education wholeheartedly,” he noted, reflecting on the support from his family that played a crucial role in his success.
As he looks to the future, Koli encourages other students to hold onto their dreams and stand firm against peer pressure, illustrating that perseverance in the face of adversity can lead to fulfilling achievements. Koli’s story is a testament to the potential within every individual to overcome obstacles and strive toward their goals, inspiring hope for current and future students navigating similar journeys.
