Sadom Kaewkanjana delivered an impressive performance on Thursday, shooting a 3-under 68 at the Open Championship, positioning him near the top of the leaderboard. However, his journey to this moment is anything but ordinary.
The 27-year-old from Thailand took a sabbatical from golf in 2023, embracing a period of reflection and spiritual growth as a Buddhist monk. During this time, he sought to repay his parents and cultivate inner peace, stating, “I was ordained because I wanted to return the greatest merit and repay my parents.” He noted that the fasting from the distractions of the outside world helped him achieve a greater level of calm and focus, which he believes will enhance his golfing skills.
Kaewkanjana made a notable return to competitive golf after previously qualifying for The Open at St. Andrews in 2022, where he made an impressive showing by tying for 11th place. His achievements continued as he recently secured a spot in the Royal Portrush via his remarkable victory at the Kolon Korea Open, part of the Asian Tour Qualifying Series.
During the first round, Kaewkanjana demonstrated skill and precision, making the turn with a score of 3-under 33. He showcased his talent with a birdie on the par-5 second hole and an impressive eagle at the par-4 fifth hole, landing his tee shot just 23 feet from the pin and sinking the putt. Despite a bogey on the 11th hole, he maintained his momentum, responding with a birdie on the 16th to close the round just one stroke off the lead.
Kaewkanjana’s narrative of personal and professional evolution highlights not only his dedication to the sport but also the importance of mental well-being in athletics. His unique experience could serve as an inspiration to others, showcasing how time away from the game can foster growth and enhance performance when returning to competition.
