“From Local Hero to Major League Dream: Ian Seymour’s Journey to the Rays”

Worcester — The excitement surrounding Roman Anthony’s remarkable 495-foot grand slam quickly transformed into buzz about Ian Seymour’s promotion to the major leagues on Sunday morning. The former standout pitcher from St. John’s High School has officially joined the Tampa Bay Rays’ active roster, just in time for their game at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida.

Though Seymour did not make an appearance in the game against Miami, the Rays will be traveling to Boston for a three-game series starting Monday, which could present an opportunity for him to make his debut.

Seymour, 26, has become a local favorite, praised by his former high school coach Charlie Eppinger as “a great kid from such a great family.” He has drawn admiration not only for his skill on the field but also for his character off of it. This season, he has distinguished himself in the International League, leading with 84 strikeouts and maintaining an impressive 2.95 ERA across 61 innings.

Chosen in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft by the Rays, Seymour’s journey faced challenges, including Tommy John surgery that slowed his progress in 2022. However, he made a successful return to the mound in 2023 and was subsequently named the Rays’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

His strong performance in spring training and in 12 appearances for the Durham Bulls this season earned him the call-up. Rays manager Kevin Cash highlighted Seymour’s impact, affirming that he made a “great impression.”

Seymour’s recent accolades come only 16 days after his first Triple-A start at Polar Park, where he pitched a season-high 98 pitches. Reflecting on that game, which his family attended, he expressed gratitude for the supportive group surrounding him. Their commitment was evident as they made the nearly 200-mile journey from Jacksonville to watch him play for the Rays.

The news of his major league promotion emphasizes the significance of perseverance and the support system that has aided in his development as a professional athlete. As Seymour prepares for this new chapter with the Rays, there is optimism surrounding his potential contributions to the team and the excitement of family and friends who will be cheering him on.

This story exemplifies how determination and a strong support system can propel athletes to reach their dreams, creating a positive narrative around Seymour’s rise in baseball.
