Tom Girardi, a former prominent attorney in Los Angeles, was sentenced to over seven years in prison for embezzling at least $15 million from his clients in a decade-long Ponzi scheme. A federal judge’s ruling on Tuesday also mandates that he pay a restitution of more than $2.3 million alongside fines, requiring him to report to prison by July 17.
Recently turning 86, Girardi sought to be placed in a medical facility rather than serving time, citing age-related dementia. However, U.S. District Judge Josephine Staton denied his request, underscoring the severity of his offenses. In August 2024, Girardi was found guilty on four counts of wire fraud for misappropriating funds intended for clients, some of whom have endured traumatic injuries or lost loved ones. One notable victim included a man severely injured in a natural gas explosion that also claimed his girlfriend’s life.
Prosecutors highlighted Girardi’s extravagant lifestyle as he used the stolen funds to finance private jets, jewelry, and to settle claims from other clients. His lavish existence was widely showcased on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” featuring his estranged wife, Erika Girardi, known as pop singer Erika Jayne. U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada remarked on Girardi’s facade of being a “Champion of Justice,” stating he instead represented a case of “Robin-Hood-in-reverse,” where he took from the vulnerable to sustain a luxurious lifestyle.
The fall from grace for Girardi began in 2021 when allegations of misconduct emerged, particularly following a lawsuit from an attorney he collaborated with in representing families affected by the fatal 2018 Lion Air Flight crash.
