Roman Hemby, a standout running back for Indiana University, credits his success in college football to the strong foundation he received at The John Carroll School, where he was instilled with vital Catholic values that continue to guide him today. Hemby, who transferred from the University of Maryland, has been pivotal in transforming Indiana’s football program into a top contender, leading the Hoosiers to an impressive 13-0 record and a No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff.
Growing up in Edgewood, Hemby played for Maryland for four seasons, participating in 42 games where he amassed 2,347 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, alongside 112 catches for 921 yards. Despite showcasing undeniable talent, the Terps struggled to make a significant impact in the Big Ten Conference, finishing with a 27-24 overall record during his tenure. Hemby values his time in Maryland but acknowledges that it was his experience at John Carroll that helped him recognize his potential.
“Without Maryland, I wouldn’t be [at Indiana]. I definitely wouldn’t be here without John Carroll. My high school helped me to see the kind of heights I could reach,” Hemby reflected, noting that he had options from several top football programs after entering the Transfer Portal in December 2024. Ultimately, Hemby chose to join Indiana, where head coach Curt Cignetti has successfully led the team to a historic season.
In November, Hemby faced off against his former team, Maryland, and made an impact by rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown, contributing to Indiana’s 55-10 victory. His mother, Charleena Hemby, shared that his agent had multiple teams interested in him once he entered the portal, but it was Cignetti who recognized Hemby’s potential and brought him into the Hoosier family.
The John Carroll School, an independent Catholic institution established in 1964, has played a transformative role in Hemby’s life. Its mission emphasizes the importance of faith, community service, and academic achievement, shaping students into well-rounded individuals. Hemby noted, “The atmosphere at John Carroll let me know that God had a plan for me,” adding that the school reinforces a sense of community and support among its students.
With a successful youth football camp started during his time at Maryland and considerable support from the John Carroll community, Hemby demonstrates his commitment to giving back. Former athletics director Seth Goldberg praised Hemby, recalling the hard work and positive spirit he exhibited both in sports and in life. Hemby’s determination and character have not only made him a valuable player but also a respected figure in his community.
As Indiana prepares to face No. 9 Alabama in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals on January 1 at the Rose Bowl, Hemby’s journey reflects the potential for growth and excellence found in a supportive environment.
