Insurance officer Losana Tuitokova is channeling her artistic talents into a burgeoning business that emphasizes the significance of unique Fijian-crafted products. Balancing her role at LICI insurance from eight to four, Ms. Tuitokova devotes her spare time to her enterprise, Kilikali Creation, named after her family farm where her creative journey took root.
Tuitokova believes that true success is not limited to traditional employment but lies in recognizing and nurturing one’s God-given abilities. “The talent doesn’t depend on any school that you attend. It’s a God-given gift,” she remarked. She focuses on a distinctive artistic technique called “blotching,” where paint is directly applied onto fabrics like calico and rayon. This innovative approach enables her to create original designs that are entirely unique, setting her apart from conventional tie-dye methods.
Her collection features sarongs priced at approximately $60 and shirts for about $50. Tuitokova’s entrepreneurial journey started humbly; her first products sold at a local retailer for just $10 each. With aspirations to motivate others in exploring their creative potential, she envisions her business as not only a retirement plan but also a cherished legacy for her children, instilling in them the value of artistic expression.
Tuitokova’s marketing strategy relies heavily on social media, emphasizing community engagement over financial profit. She dreams of establishing a boutique shop in Tavua to promote local, Fiji-made products, further distinguishing her brand from mass-produced imports.
“We must have pride in our country. We have to use our talents, otherwise, they’re being lost,” she advocates, calling for a heightened appreciation for local artistry. Her journey mirrors that of other local entrepreneurs who are creatively merging their passions with business, such as Tiko Ledua with her upcycling art collection, and Alexandra Tikomaitoga, who is forging her niche in handcrafted items at the Suva Flea Market.
The emergence of these local artisans underscores a growing appreciation for unique, handmade products that honor cultural heritage and community resilience. Through her art and entrepreneurial spirit, Tuitokova embodies the essence of Fijian craftsmanship, demonstrating that creativity and dedication can pave the way for success.
