Kata Wiseman Koli, a dedicated media graduate from Fiji National University (FNU), has shared the personal challenges that defined his journey toward obtaining a Bachelor of Media and Communication. Originally from Nadi, Koli faced significant hurdles adapting to life in Suva, where he lived with relatives while pursuing his education. He reflected on the difficulties of this transition, particularly noting the constraints he encountered compared to his more free-spirited life at home.
“Being away from home presented its own challenges. We had to adjust to the expectations of others, which limited our freedom,” Koli said, conveying a deep sense of the independence he missed during this time.
In spite of these obstacles, Koli found resilience through his faith, which he credits as a critical factor in his perseverance. “I was just praying to God and committing myself to Him, trusting that He would guide me and protect me. God was the only one who helped me overcome these challenges,” he shared, illustrating how spirituality bolstered his strength.
Koli praised the practical training he received at FNU, highlighting its role in equipping him for a successful career in the media industry. He is currently employed as a photographer at The Fiji Times and undertook a six-month internship at Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), experiences that he believes greatly enhanced his professional abilities.
“My parents serve as my greatest motivation. Their resilience in overcoming challenges inspired me to pursue my education wholeheartedly,” Koli reflected, acknowledging the vital support he received from his family during his academic journey.
As Koli looks ahead, he encourages fellow students to remain steadfast in their aspirations and to resist peer pressure. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of the strength found in perseverance, demonstrating how overcoming adversity can lead to remarkable achievements. Koli’s experience resonates with current and future students, instilling hope for those navigating similar challenges in pursuit of their dreams.
