From Hesitation to Hero: The Surprising Journey of Chris Pratt to Star-Lord

In a recent episode of the podcast Armchair Expert, director James Gunn shared insights into the challenging casting process for the lead role of Star-Lord in the hit Marvel film “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Initially, Gunn was skeptical about Chris Pratt’s suitability for the role, recalling his first thoughts when considering Pratt: “This joker? No way.” At the time, Pratt was best known for his role on the television show “Parks and Recreation,” and Gunn felt uncertain about his ability to portray the character effectively.

Despite auditioning roughly 300 actors and screen-testing over two dozen, Gunn found himself at an impasse. However, casting director Sarah Finn managed to persuade Gunn to give Pratt an audition, leading to a swift realization that he was the perfect fit for the role. “It was not 12 seconds into the audition and I turned around to Sarah and I said, ‘He’s the one,’” Gunn stated.

The list of actors who auditioned for Star-Lord includes notable names such as Adam Brody, Glenn Howerton, and Joel Edgerton. In retrospect, Edgerton acknowledged Pratt’s unique understanding of the film’s tone, which ultimately set him apart. Brody also commented on Pratt’s physicality, noting he was a better fit due to being “bigger, stronger.”

“Guardians of the Galaxy” became a massive success and led to two sequels, with Gunn directing the third installment, which marked his final Marvel film. Now at the helm of DC Studios, Gunn is set to release “Superman,” further solidifying his status as a leading figure in the industry.

This story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of casting in Hollywood, showcasing how quick judgments can often be overturned by talent and charisma in auditions, ultimately leading to iconic performances.
