The experience of being part of The Hofstra Chronicle as a staff copyeditor has left a lasting impact on the student, who has spent two and a half years contributing to the campus newspaper. Initially pursuing a major in English with a concentration in publishing studies and literature, the student never anticipated joining the school newspaper. However, a shift in focus occurred during their tenure at Hofstra, leading them to also pursue a minor in journalism.
Encouraged by friend and former Copy Chief Nell Stultz to join The Chronicle, the student embraced the opportunity despite initial hesitations about their editing skills. Under Nell’s mentorship, they quickly adapted to newspaper editing, learning essential techniques related to AP Style. This mentorship proved invaluable and led to their promotion to Assistant Copy Chief in the spring of their sophomore year.
Now, as a senior, the student reflects on their growth alongside fellow assistants. With Madeline Sisk stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief, and Meredith Tarsi and Gianna Costanzo promoted to Copy Chief, the publication continues to thrive. The transition has not been without challenges, especially in securing assistants, but there is confidence in the new leadership ensuring the copy section’s success.
The memories shared, including a memorable trip to the Men’s Coastal Athletic Association tournament, highlight the strong bonds built within the team. Gratitude is expressed towards various peers who contributed to an enriching experience—each shaping their journey in journalism.
The student looks forward to graduation while acknowledging that The Hofstra Chronicle has been a cherished part of their college life. This sense of community and shared passion for journalism underscores the importance of student organizations in fostering growth and camaraderie on college campuses. It serves as a reminder of how involvement in such organizations can lead to lasting friendships and invaluable skills that will benefit students in their future endeavors.
