Shahil Ram has received the esteemed 2024 FETA Rising Star Award, signifying a major milestone in his professional journey. His recent placement at Sheraton Sydney has not only been a career highlight but has provided valuable insights into the future of sustainable hospitality on a global scale.
In his position as Farm Executive at Sheraton Fiji Farm, which enhances the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort and Sheraton Denarau Villas, Mr. Ram plays a critical role in promoting local sustainability initiatives. The FETA Rising Star Award, presented in February 2025, was accompanied by a sponsored return flight from Fiji Airways, enabling Mr. Ram to transition from Fiji’s rural landscape to Sydney’s urban environment.
This unique experience has proven instrumental in setting benchmarks for sustainability efforts in Denarau. Mr. Ram described receiving the FETA Rising Star Award as a humbling moment, recognizing the importance of their work at Sheraton Fiji Farm. Their initiatives have effectively cut food miles by an estimated two tonnes annually, as fresh produce is supplied to seven restaurants and bars, which has also led to a decrease in packaging waste.
While in Sydney, Mr. Ram observed a range of innovative urban solutions addressing sustainability challenges. He was particularly struck by the impressive hydroponic Greenspace initiatives that conserve up to 40 percent more water than traditional practices, as well as the integration of nature into the city through features like rooftop beehives.
Upon returning to Fiji, Mr. Ram wasted no time implementing changes informed by his experiences in Sydney. He and his team have introduced three beehives at Sheraton Fiji Farm, with their first honey harvest yielding an impressive 40 kilograms, now showcased in various restaurant menus and cocktails.
Mr. Ram credits FETA and Fiji Airways for significantly accelerating his career, allowing him to achieve in a short span what might have taken years. He strongly advocates for platforms that highlight essential roles in tourism, underscoring the importance of sustainability and agricultural practices.
As the next awards ceremony approaches in 2025, Mr. Ram encourages young professionals to actively pursue growth opportunities and step outside their comfort zones, suggesting that true development lies just beyond familiar boundaries.
