Dr. Mohammed Rasheed Iqbal has achieved a remarkable milestone for Fiji National University by being awarded a PhD in Animal Science and Climate Change. This achievement positions him as the first doctoral graduate from the College of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry (CAFF).

His doctoral dissertation, entitled “Adaptive Capacity of the Fijian Dairy Industry to Climate Change and Animal Diseases,” represents years of diligent research. Reflecting on his educational journey, Dr. Iqbal shared how it transformed from a background in farming to earning a PhD at FNU.

Hailing from Tailevu, Dr. Iqbal’s early experiences in beef production fostered his enthusiasm for animal science. His life narrative underscores themes of resilience, struggle, and triumph over challenges. These experiences naturally led to his research focus on the impacts of climate change and diseases on Fiji’s dairy sector.

Dr. Iqbal serves as a compelling role model for Fijian students, demonstrating that commitment and effort can triumph over socio-economic obstacles. His academic path commenced in 2014 at FNU, where he progressed from Certificate TVET to Higher Education PhD.

His extensive qualifications include a Certificate III in Commercial Agriculture, a Trade Diploma in Animal Husbandry, a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry, a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching, a Postgraduate Diploma in Agriculture, and a Master’s by Research in Animal Science. Dr. Iqbal expressed gratitude toward his mentors, including Associate Professor Dr. Royford Bundi Magiri, Dr. Harrison Osundwa Lutta, Professor Nii-K Plange, Professor Paul Adelji, Associate Professor Dr. Kaliova Ravuiwasa, and FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Walu Nabobo-Baba, whose support has been pivotal in his educational and professional growth.

In 2024, Dr. Iqbal began as a graduate teaching assistant and became a part-time lecturer in 2025, continuing to inspire the future leaders in animal science within his community. His story not only highlights academic achievement but also emphasizes the importance of mentorship and education in navigating life’s challenges, contributing to a hopeful future for students in Fiji.
