In the tranquil town of Velovelo, Lautoka, a young educator named Avish Kumar has embarked on a remarkable journey that has significantly shaped his life and career. At just 24 years old, Kumar embodies a new generation of educators in Fiji, having arrived at his teaching role through an unconventional path.
Initially aiming for a career in civil engineering, Kumar’s plans were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to financial difficulties that made continuing his education challenging. This pivotal moment prompted him to reassess his interests and ultimately pivot from engineering to education, rekindling his deep-rooted passion for music—a talent he had nurtured informally over the years.
Growing up in a family without musical influences, Kumar’s fascination with music was ignited by watching kirtan singers at local gatherings and his exposure to Bollywood and Hollywood hits. Songs like “Laboon Ko,” alongside the kirtan “Sawali Surat,” became the soundtrack of his childhood and guided his discovery of music.
Using his innate talent and a self-taught approach, Kumar honed his musical abilities by emulating artists he admired. He soon took formal steps toward a career in Music and Physical Education, which laid the foundation for him to connect with students just a few years younger. His youthful approach allows him to resonate with them, integrating modern references and contemporary teaching methods that include technology-driven resources like PowerPoint presentations and interactive demonstrations. One notable experience was teaching a local Fijian student the harmonium, where he emphasized focused practice to help improve the student’s technique.
Kumar continues to pursue music beyond the classroom as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, often drawing inspiration from classical Bollywood styles. These performances provide him with an avenue to express his creativity and relax after an intensive day of teaching.
With a postgraduate degree in education now under his belt, Kumar is filled with hope and enthusiasm as he aims to establish a school choir and music club. This initiative is set to provide students with an invaluable platform to cultivate self-expression, confidence, and discipline through music.
Kumar’s story serves as a powerful reminder that when one’s original plans falter, new and fulfilling paths can emerge from a place of passion and resilience. His dedication to music and education not only inspires his students but also illustrates the importance of following one’s true calling, reinforcing the notion that adaptability and perseverance can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities.
