Rizwan Sheik Madar, a 34-year-old manager at Matata Kitchen in Labasa Town, exemplifies the power of perseverance and dedication. His inviting smile not only welcomes customers but also reflects a life marked by resilience and hard work. Growing up in a financially challenged environment, with a father who sold produce at the market and a mother who managed domestic duties, Rizwan’s upbringing instilled in him the essential values of diligence and determination.
After completing Form 6, Rizwan faced challenges when his parents were unable to fund his further education. Accepting the reality of his situation, he took the initiative to support his family, entering the workforce at a young age by starting his journey at Matata Kitchen. He initially undertook various menial tasks, including washing dishes and scrubbing pots, notwithstanding his lack of prior cooking experience.
Rizwan’s eagerness to learn led him to find a mentor in the restaurant’s cook. Under her guidance, he honed his culinary skills and became adept at preparing traditional Fijian dishes, such as fish lolo and rourou. Over 15 to 16 years, he earned the trust of the restaurant owners as he steadily climbed the ranks, ultimately reaching the position of manager.
Now, Rizwan oversees Matata Kitchen with minimal supervision, reflecting the strong relationship he has forged with the owner, whom he considers a brother. His achievements resonate beyond personal success; they are deeply intertwined with his commitment to improve his family’s life and provide them with opportunities he didn’t have growing up.
Rizwan’s story stands as an inspiring beacon for those grappling with their challenges. He champions the values of patience, persistence, and hope, urging people to keep striving forward despite setbacks. “I was just a Form 6 student, and I started small. But I knew that if I kept going, I would reach somewhere good,” he shares, motivating residents of Labasa to maintain their optimism, even when life’s circumstances seem misaligned.
His narrative serves as a powerful reminder that determination and hard work can lead to meaningful successes. Through his journey, Rizwan hopes to inspire others to pursue their dreams, regardless of their starting points.
