Nadi resident Nima Naidu has made a remarkable transition from cooking in a restaurant kitchen to blossoming as a florist, a change she embraces wholeheartedly. Coming from a farming background, Ms. Naidu’s love for plants and flowers runs deep in her family, as both her father and in-laws are engaged in agriculture.
“I love blooming flowers,” Ms. Naidu expressed with enthusiasm. “It’s my passion and something I truly enjoy doing. Farming and planting run in our family’s genes.” The former chef at Tigers Restaurant in Lautoka found her artistic flair for flower arrangement five years ago, turning her hobby into a fulfilling business.
Now with her children married and her newfound career thriving, Ms. Naidu enjoys the satisfaction that comes from her floral work. “This is my source of income, and I’ve been making flower arrangements for the past five years. It keeps me happy and active,” she remarked.
Starting small, Ms. Naidu received encouragement from friends and family, which motivated her to transform her floral passion into a commercially viable venture. Her hard work and creativity have garnered her recognition, winning three awards at various floral exhibitions, including one organized by South Sea Orchids in Nadi. “I’m grateful to have participated in these shows,” she noted.
Despite the joy her flowers bring, she faces challenges from the unpredictable weather in Nadi, which can impact her sales significantly. Her earnings usually fluctuate between $200 to $300 weekly, but during special events like flower shows, she can earn as much as $1,000.
Ms. Naidu’s recent participation in the National Agriculture Show in Nadi was a highlight of her journey, where her unique floral arrangements drew considerable attention. “People love buying my flowers,” she said, pride illuminating her words. The beauty and fragrance of her flowers, she explains, not only uplift her spirits but also bring joy to the community around her.
Her story reflects a growing trend among women in Fiji who are turning their passions into livelihoods that provide for their families and instill a sense of independence. Whether through floristry or farming, these women demonstrate that resilience and creativity can lead to positive changes in both their lives and their communities. As Ms. Naidu continues to thrive, she stands as an inspiring example of how dedication to one’s passion can blossom into a successful and rewarding career.
