Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, a 24-year-old actor from Auckland, New Zealand, has embarked on a remarkable journey as he steps into the spotlight with his role in the upcoming film “Predator: Badlands.” Initially unaware that he was auditioning for a “Predator” film, Schuster-Koloamatangi recalls the vague character description that simply read “a creature,” leaving him to explore his own interpretation. Growing up as a child of Tongan and Samoan descent, he rarely saw representation of Polynesians in media, which fueled his ambition to break into acting, a field he once thought was unattainable.
Before diving into acting, Schuster-Koloamatangi considered a career in rugby, influenced by his athletic family. However, he began nurturing his passion for performance in middle school, creating a YouTube channel and participating in high school plays. His breakthrough came when he auditioned for a role in a New Zealand miniseries about a rugby player, leading him to eventually land an agent and earn a leading role in the miniseries “The Panthers,” which explored Polynesian youths forming a political movement inspired by the American Black Panther Party.
In “Predator: Badlands,” Schuster-Koloamatangi plays Dek, a young member of the Yautja alien species who sets out to prove himself. His physically demanding role included an audition that featured an obstacle course, where he showcased his agility and ferocity, impressing director Dan Trachtenberg. Schuster-Koloamatangi’s dedication to his craft is evident as he had to perform in an invented alien language and wear a full Yautja suit, utilizing performance capture technology to bring his character to life.
The film also features Elle Fanning as Thia, an android whom Dek carries throughout the movie, representing both a literal and symbolic weight on Schuster-Koloamatangi’s shoulders. The two actors developed a strong bond during filming, often spending extended hours strapped together, fostering a sense of trust and camaraderie.
Filming in New Zealand was a homecoming experience for Schuster-Koloamatangi, who took pride in showcasing his country’s landscapes, many of which he had never seen before.
