Davis Riley recently shared his experience of being an alternate for the PGA Tour’s Signature Events, emphasizing the risks and rewards that come with being so close yet slightly detached from the elite ranks of professional golf. While achieving a spot on the PGA Tour is a dream for many, those who find themselves in the alternate position often face a challenging grind to secure a spot in high-stakes tournaments.
Riley’s opportunity arose following Brian Campbell’s withdrawal from the Travelers Championship, which led to a last-minute call on the morning of the tournament. Fortunately, Riley was already present at TPC River Highlands, having anticipated the possibility of being called up. This proactive approach proved beneficial, contrasting with his experience at The Memorial, where he remained on-site all day without receiving a tee time.
“I arrived on property around 6:30… I just wanted to make sure I gave myself plenty of time because if I do get in, I want to be somewhat prepared,” Riley said. His preparedness paid off as he received a text shortly after arriving, confirming his tee time, allowing him to gather himself and get ready for play.
Riley also highlighted the emotional and financial aspects of being an alternate, explaining the difficult decision to travel to a tournament with hopes of playing, knowing that he might end up waiting without any shot at competing. “It’s tough… you kind of think guys aren’t going to back out. But I would be mad if I was sitting at home and I were to get in,” he reflected.
Ultimately, Riley capitalized on his chance, shooting an impressive four-under 66 in the opening round, demonstrating that seizing opportunities can lead to significant outcomes in professional golf.
