From a School Clinic to Fiji’s World Cup: Naomi Sivoi’s Rise

Just two years ago, Naomi Tegu Sivoi was a typical student at Richmond Methodist High School in Kadavu, with little knowledge of rugby league. However, a transformative rugby league development clinic held at her school in 2023 set her on an extraordinary path. Today, her incredible journey has culminated in her being part of the historic Fiji Bulikula team, which has qualified for the Rugby League World Cup for the first time.

Sivoi made her international debut in their opening match against Canada during the IRL World Series. She showcased her talent by contributing to a remarkable 62–4 victory over Nigeria, scoring a try in the final match. Her ascent to the Bulikula team began shortly after that pivotal clinic when she decided to transfer to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial High School in Suva to further pursue her passion for rugby league. There, she joined the Rise Rookie Girls Program, an initiative designed to empower young women in the sport.

In 2024, Sivoi marked her presence in the FNRLW competition with the Lami Steelers before moving on to the USP Raiders this year. Her skillset also earned her a place among five local players selected to participate in the Invitational Rising League Talent Program in Australia earlier this year. It was during this program that she attracted the attention of Bulikula’s coaching staff and secured her spot in the national squad.

Sivoi’s story resonates with the broader narrative of women’s rugby in Fiji, showcasing the increasing support and recognition for female athletes. Her journey is a testament to the opportunities that arise when young women are given the chance to pursue their dreams in sports. With the Fiji Bulikula team eager to carve a mark on the global stage, Sivoi’s achievements embody hope and inspiration for future generations of female rugby players in Fiji and beyond. As they prepare for upcoming challenges, the team not only represents their nation but also symbolizes the progress being made in women’s sports across the region.
