CLEVELAND, Ohio — In response to the looming threat of extreme cold weather, numerous school districts across Northeast Ohio have opted to cancel classes for Friday, January 23, 2026. The National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory, forecasting morning temperatures around 12 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the combination of steady winds at approximately 13 mph, with gusts exceeding 30 mph, is expected to create dangerously low wind chill levels, potentially plummeting to as low as 15 degrees below zero.

Districts announcing school closures include Avon, Avon Lake, Bay Village, East Cleveland, Elyria City, Fairview Park, Lorain City, North Olmsted, Parma, and Rocky River. Following are some of the additional schools impacted by the cancellations:

– Akron Public Schools (notably no afterschool activities)
– Amherst Exempted Village Schools
– Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy
– Geneva Area City Schools
– North Ridgeville City Schools
– Rocky River City Schools, among many others.

The National Weather Service’s advisory is set to be in effect from 6 a.m. Friday until 7 a.m. Saturday, with the expectation that temperatures may prompt similar precautions across other sectors.

As the community braves the biting cold, residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather alerts, and for those requiring alternative care solutions on the closure day, information related to daycare and church events can be viewed through local resources.

While the current weather conditions are a cause for concern, communities throughout Northeast Ohio are coming together to ensure the safety and well-being of their students and families. Efforts to monitor the situation highlight a proactive approach as the region faces these challenging weather conditions.
