For Cy Rae Campbell, a first-year middle hitter on the Wake Forest volleyball team, this experience is particularly pronounced as she navigates her inaugural year in Winston-Salem during the 2024-25 academic year. As she approaches the midpoint of her first season, Cy has absorbed a wealth of experiences both on and off the court. With final exams and the regular season coming to a head, November holds additional significance for Cy as it marks National Native American Heritage Month.
“This month means a lot to me,” Cy expressed. “It’s about celebrating our past, present, and future, and it highlights what we can stand for as a community.”
Hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Cy’s upbringing was deeply influenced by her active participation in sports and her ties to the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. Reflecting on her cultural heritage, she emphasized the importance of community and family.
“Native Americans have always played a role in American culture,” Cy observed, pointing to historical examples like the Code Talkers. “It means a lot to give back and stand proud. We cherish each other and our community.”
Growing up in Olathe, Cy enjoyed the balance of local opportunities while finding ways to keep herself engaged, whether through sports or spending time with friends. Her dedication to volleyball culminated at Heritage Christian Academy, where she emerged as one of the top prospects in the nation and led her team to four consecutive state championships.
“The most enjoyable part of that journey was doing it with my friends,” Cy reflected about her time at Heritage Christian. “Winning four years in a row was a huge achievement, and it wouldn’t have been possible without our strong bond.”
Once it was time to choose a college, Cy made an early commitment to Wake Forest in July 2022, drawn to the university’s inclusive spirit and its Pro Humanitate motto. The transition from Kansas to the East Coast has been an adjustment, especially in terms of climate.
“It’s definitely warmer here! In Kansas, you experience all four seasons,” she noted. Despite the differences, Cy has appreciated the relaxed atmosphere of Wake Forest and how it fosters inclusivity.
As a member of a freshman class that includes two other newcomers, Cy is gearing up for the second half of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) season. The transition to collegiate volleyball has been eye-opening for her, as the pace and physicality of the game differ greatly from high school.
“There’s a noticeable difference in playing against older, more developed athletes. I always considered myself fast, but this level is another step up,” she explained. “In college, you have to analyze the game more intently, studying players for hours to find their weaknesses.”
As she adapts and grows, Cy remains focused on a few key personal goals as her first semester progresses. Staying on top of her schoolwork is her priority, as finding a balance between academics and athletics can be challenging. With hopes to cultivate new friendships in the spring, Cy also plans to dedicate time to her training, knowing that real improvement often comes in the offseason.
“I want to work on becoming faster and stronger. Improvement truly begins in the weight room, and the spring will offer me an opportunity to elevate my game,” she stated.
