Freshman QB Carter Smith Set for Road Test as Wisconsin Faces No. 2 Indiana

The University of Wisconsin is set to introduce quarterback Carter Smith, a true freshman and former Gatorade Florida Player of the Year, as they prepare to face No. 2 Indiana on Saturday. This decision comes amidst a challenging season marked by a series of injuries, as head coach Luke Fickell seeks to establish a more stable quarterback situation for the Badgers.

Smith steps in for sophomore Danny O’Neil, who sustained a right leg injury during the first quarter of last week’s narrow 13-10 victory against then-No. 23 Washington. O’Neil, who was carted off after suffering the injury on a 21-yard keeper, was visibly upset as he was taken to the locker room and did not return to the game.

In his debut, Smith completed 3 of 12 passes for just 8 yards but demonstrated his athleticism by rushing for 47 yards and scoring a touchdown. While senior Hunter Simmons remains available, Smith is poised to take the first snaps as Wisconsin looks to find equilibrium at a position that has seen significant turmoil throughout Fickell’s tenure.

The Badgers have faced a quarterback conundrum this season, starting with Billy Edwards Jr. as the initial starter. Edwards, however, suffered a knee sprain in the opening game and has only managed to play one complete series since then. In total, Wisconsin’s preferred quarterback options have been available for just 11 of the last 34 games dating back to 2023.

Carter Smith brings an impressive pedigree to the field. As a senior at Bishop Verot High School, he amassed remarkable statistics, tallying 29 passing touchdowns, 19 rushing touchdowns, and over 2,900 total yards. Known for his dual-threat capability, Smith is recognized for his ability to make off-platform throws, his physical running style, and his fierce competitiveness. Additionally, he excels in baseball, showcasing a strong arm with a fastball that reaches 91 mph.

Now, Smith will face his first career start on the road against one of college football’s elite teams, presenting a significant test for the young quarterback. With the mounting pressure, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how this dynamic athlete handles the challenge ahead.
