The Providence College Friars are gearing up to host Georgetown University this Saturday, January 24, at 12:30 p.m. at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. The showdown will be aired on TNT/truTV, adding to the excitement surrounding the matchup. Historically, Georgetown holds a slight edge in the all-time series with a record of 48-38, though the Friars are 23-15 when playing at home.

This season, the Friars are showcasing a high-octane style of basketball, currently leading the BIG EAST in scoring at an impressive 89.7 points per game, ranking 16th nationally. A significant contributor to this scoring surge is freshman Stefan Vaaks, who recently earned his second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolade after boasting an average of 22.5 points and 4.0 assists in two games. Vaaks had a standout performance, scoring a career-high 26 points against Marquette, marking his fourth consecutive game with 20 or more points—a feat last matched by a BIG EAST freshman in 2007.

Alongside Vaaks, Jamier Jones also made headlines when he was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after averaging 20.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over the same period. The duo is making history as the first freshman pair in Friars’ history to both score over 20 points in a single game, achieving this against Villanova.

However, the team faces challenges as they continue to navigate injuries. Graduate student Jason Edwards has been sidelined for the last three games due to a foot injury but is just 13 points away from reaching 1,500 for his career. Freshman Oswin Erhunmwunse is also making waves, leading the BIG EAST in blocks with 48 this season.

The Friars have shown resilience this season; although they have suffered six losses in the BIG EAST, five have come by six points or less, including three in overtime. This competitive edge hints at a tightly contested matchup as they prepare to face Georgetown, a team that previously dealt them a 93-72 loss during their last meeting on February 19, 2025.

This season marks the 99th for Providence College basketball, with hopes high as they strive for another NCAA Tournament appearance. As the Friars continue to develop their young talent, fans are optimistic about the potential growth and skill of this exciting roster. With the energy of a home game and the stakes of a storied rivalry, the upcoming contest promises to be thrilling for players and fans alike.
