The Lealman Exchange, located at 5175 45th St. N., is set to host a new farmers market beginning in October.
The Lealman Farmers Market will take place on the fourth Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering residents access to a variety of fresh, locally sourced produce, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, honey, and more. Currently, over a dozen vendors have committed to participating, with the market having the capacity for up to 35 vendors.
This initiative is designed to tackle the community’s limited access to fresh food and strengthen the connection between residents and local Florida farmers.
Lealman has grappled with the challenges of being a food desert, lacking a single grocery store. Local officials have invested resources to improve conditions in the area, and the establishment of this farmers market is a strategic response to bring fresh food directly to residents.
“Establishing a food market that provides fresh produce and healthy food options for the Lealman community is crucial for the well-being of its residents,” stated Tom Almonte, Pinellas County Assistant County Administrator. “This initiative ensures that all community members, regardless of income, can make healthier food choices, ultimately contributing to a stronger and more resilient community.”
Choosing the Lealman Exchange as the market’s venue is particularly meaningful. The community center, run as a public/private partnership between Pinellas County and the St. Petersburg Foundation, already plays a vital role in offering various community services and hosting events.
“Our aim goes beyond just improving food access; we want the Lealman Farmers Market to evolve into a place for community gatherings,” said Joe Hamilton, cofounder of the St. Petersburg Foundation. “When people come together in a positive environment, they form relationships that foster unity and resilience, enhancing the overall quality of life.”
Market organizers are actively seeking additional local farmers, artisans, and food producers. More details about the Lealman Farmers Market, including upcoming dates and a vendor sign-up form, can be found online.
