French Basketball Team Faces Roster Shuffle Ahead of Euro Championship

The French basketball federation has provided an update regarding the team preparation for the upcoming Euro championship next month. As the event approaches, some players will join the team later than expected.

In 2023, the federation was firm regarding players competing in the WNBA during the Euro preparation, resulting in Marine Johannes, one of the top French players, having to forgo participation. The situation has changed since then; the WNBA’s popularity has surged, fueled by a lucrative ten-year, $2 billion TV contract, drawing many French players. Consequently, the FFBB must adapt and negotiate with each player and their respective franchises. Under the current WNBA collective agreement, players cannot be released for international competitions until two weeks before the event. Also, to secure seniority and thereby better contracts over their careers, players must not be absent for more than 21 days during a season.

As the Euro is set to take place from June 18 to 29, and preparation commenced Monday in Reims with 18 players, the federation announced that several players will be arriving gradually. Gabrielle Williams, Dominique Malonga, Carla Leite, and Marine Johannes have already opted out to prioritize their WNBA careers this summer. Meanwhile, three additional players from the American league will join the training camp later: Leïla Lacan (20 years old, Connecticut Sun) will arrive during the Brest camp on May 28, Marième Badiane (30 years old, Minnesota Lynx) will join during the INSEP camp on June 8, and Janelle Salaün (23 years old, Golden State Valkyries) will appear in the Orléans camp on June 12. The first preparatory match for the Olympic silver medalists is scheduled for this Sunday against Turkey. Despite the player absences, the team boasts several quality athletes, including captain Valériane Ayayi, Marine Fauthoux, Iliana Rupert, and Pauline Astier.

This situation presents a unique challenge for the French team as they prepare for the Euro, but it also highlights the growing prominence and investment in women’s basketball on an international scale. The players’ commitment to their league indicates progress in establishing a professional environment where athletes can thrive. The upcoming tournament will be an opportunity for the team to showcase their depth and skill, fostering hope for a successful campaign.
