West Michigan experienced significant challenges for drivers on Friday due to a combination of freezing rain, wind, and fresh snowfall. The inclement weather resulted in Michigan State Police responding to 25 crashes and slide-offs throughout the region.

A notable incident occurred at 11 a.m. when a crash in Kalamazoo County led to the closure of the southbound lanes of US-131 at D Avenue. This incident caused a major traffic jam, with cars backed up for miles as drivers were diverted at Exit 44.

Logan Eichelberd, a Kalamazoo resident, remarked on the situation, stating, “I think we passed about two or three cars in the ditch. I think overall people are just taking it easy because they are seeing all of these cars in the ditch, which is good that people are taking it seriously.”

The southbound lanes of US-131 were reopened at around 2 p.m., according to reports from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). However, shortly after this, News Channel 3 crews observed another incident involving a car that had flipped over on its side after sliding off the northbound lanes of US-131 near Stadium Drive, with Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies quickly responding to the scene. The status of any injuries from that crash is still being investigated.

Overall, while the weather created hazardous driving conditions, residents appear to be remaining cautious on the road. It’s important for drivers to stay alert and take necessary precautions during these winter weather conditions to ensure safety on the highways.
