This weekend marks the beginning of the California State Fair, where attendees can secure free entry through a charitable initiative by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD). By donating five nonperishable, non-expired food items per person, fair-goers can receive a same-day admissions ticket. SMUD’s “Giving Friday” will take place at Cal Expo on Fridays, including July 11 and July 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations can be made at the Main, Blue, or Green entry gates, with the tickets valid until 3 p.m.

The fair, scheduled from July 11 to July 27 at Cal Expo Center on Exposition Blvd, encourages donations of high-protein food items such as canned goods, dry pasta, rice, oatmeal, and peanut butter. This year’s initiative is in partnership with the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, which supports over 320,000 individuals in the region every month through more than 200 distribution sites.

“Giving Friday embodies SMUD’s commitment to our community, especially those facing food insecurity,” stated Farres Everly, SMUD’s chief marketing and communications officer. He highlighted the significance of enabling neighbors to support each other during challenging times marked by rising costs.

Last year’s Giving Friday resulted in 19,000 pounds of food being collected and donated to the Elk Grove Food Bank, showcasing the initiative’s impact. SMUD’s continued community efforts also include previous drives for school supplies and hygiene products.

In addition to the food drive, attendees can visit SMUD booths to enjoy swag bags filled with surprises, induction cooking demonstrations, and energy-saving tips. An alternative opportunity for free admission will occur on July 19 at the Arden Fair Mall, where participants can earn a ticket by test driving an electric vehicle.

This collaboration not only enhances the State Fair experience but also fosters community spirit, helping to alleviate food insecurity among local families.
