Residents in the United States can now request additional free Covid-19 tests from the federal government as the respiratory virus season approaches, with elevated levels of the coronavirus already present in the community.
Each household is eligible to obtain four at-home test kits, which can be ordered starting today from COVIDTests.gov. These tests will be shipped free of charge next week via the US Postal Service.
This marks the seventh round of test distribution, which has provided over 900 million free tests to American residents since the program launched in winter 2021, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
The rapid antigen tests deliver results in approximately 30 minutes. This latest batch of tests is designed to identify currently circulating variants and is suitable for individuals displaying Covid-19 symptoms, those without symptoms, and both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.
“Reopening this popular program reflects the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to ensuring accessible over-the-counter COVID-19 tests for anyone who needs them this fall and winter,” said HHS Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response Dawn O’Connell. “Before gathering with family and friends this holiday season, a quick test can help keep everyone safe from COVID-19.”
Some tests come with features specifically designed for easier use by individuals with disabilities affecting dexterity or vision. Additional information regarding these tests is available at ACL.gov/AccessibleTests.
“COVID-19 testing can provide crucial information about your health, enabling you to pursue treatment options that reduce your risk of severe illness and minimizing the chance of infecting others,” stated the HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response.
To help limit the spread of Covid-19, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises individuals who test positive to remain home and isolated from others until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours.
The US Food and Drug Administration suggests taking multiple rapid tests for confirmation: two negative tests for symptomatic individuals and three for asymptomatic individuals, spaced 48 hours apart.
The CDC also encourages everyone aged 6 months and older to receive an updated Covid-19 vaccine this season to ensure they are protected.
This year offers multiple vaccination options: mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer have been updated to combat KP.2, a prevalent variant in the US since May, and are suitable for individuals 6 months and older. Novavax provides a traditional protein vaccine targeting the JN.1 variant, which is currently less prevalent, and is approved for those aged 12 and up.
The updated Covid-19 vaccinations are now available at pharmacies nationwide and can be administered alongside the annual flu vaccine.
“The best strategy as we approach winter is for everyone to stay vigilant and utilize the tools available: vaccines, testing, and treatment to combat illnesses that lead to most fall and winter fatalities and hospitalizations,” stated CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen last week.
