VAROMUE Wilson, 69, celebrated a significant milestone yesterday as she underwent successful cataract surgery, completely restoring her vision. This remarkable achievement was made possible through the dedicated work of the “Bright Journey” Medical Mission from Guangdong Province, China, which is currently in Fiji for a week-long program aimed at providing free cataract surgeries.
A cataract is a condition that clouds the lens of the eye, resulting in blurred or dim vision. This year’s initiative marks a decade of the “Bright Journey” project, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Fiji. To honor these significant milestones, the medical team is inviting community members suffering from cataracts to attend their free clinic in Suva.
After her operation, Ms. Wilson shared her journey with the media, explaining that she first noticed her eyesight deteriorating in July. “We came to see this doctor for a review and were asked to come back again because of this team from China. We had no idea we would be chosen to take part in this surgery. The Lord chose it,” she expressed. She recalled how her vision had deteriorated to the point where she needed assistance to walk outside.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Ms. Wilson expressed her appreciation for the medical team and her newfound ability to see clearly, stating that she looked forward to spending time with her granddaughter, Daisy. She is advised to take a month for complete recovery, during which she should avoid direct contact with her eyes.
The advanced techniques employed by the Chinese medical team promise to restore vision in mere minutes, providing a life-changing solution for countless individuals suffering from cataracts. Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, Fiji’s Minister for Health, highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that the country currently lacks the necessary equipment and specialized expertise for such advanced procedures. The “Bright Journey” team is based at the Pacific Eye Institute near CWM Hospital in Suva, making a profound impact on the lives of many Fijians.
