A significant crackdown on insurance fraud in Miami-Dade has culminated in the arrest of six individuals, including a husband and wife and two brothers, following an investigation into a staged car crash scheme intended to defraud an insurance company of tens of thousands of dollars. Authorities from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office emphasized that this operation marks the start of a larger initiative targeting fraudulent activities in the region.
The investigation revealed that the scheme started last November with a planned collision on Krome Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street. Brothers Armando and Elvis Mesa-Lasaga were accused of orchestrating the event, enlisting Enrique and Mary Brioso to pose as victims in the second car. The vehicles involved were intentionally damaged prior to the staged incident, with Armando Mesa-Lasaga further damaging the Brioso’s vehicle at his auto repair shop after the crash.
It was reported that the Briosos were introduced to staff at SafeCare Therapy Inc., where they signed blank therapy forms after only one visit, which were later filled out to support the fraudulent insurance claim amounting to $37,050. Detectives highlighted the impact of such fraudulent claims, stating that they lead to increased insurance premiums and can affect community services as operating costs rise.
All six individuals now face multiple charges, including insurance fraud and grand theft, with Armando Mesa-Lasaga also charged with operating a chop shop due to the discovery of rebuilt vehicles at his business.
This operation sheds light on the persistent issue of insurance fraud, with authorities reinforcing their commitment to tackling such crimes in the county. As the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office pushes forward with this initiative, residents can hope for a more secure and equitable insurance landscape, free from fraudulent schemes that burden legitimate policyholders.
