A wildfire known as the Franklin Fire erupted in the Malibu area on Monday night, and by Wednesday morning, it had expanded to nearly 4,000 acres, burning approximately 3,983 acres near Pepperdine University. As of the latest update, the fire is reported to be only 7% contained.

In response to the situation, mandatory evacuation orders have been implemented for a number of areas, including regions south of Piuma Road, north of the Pacific Ocean coastline, and east of Puerco Canyon Road, among others. Residents in these areas are compelled to leave, while additional evacuation warnings have been issued for surrounding neighborhoods.

Pepperdine University has taken precautions by requiring students to shelter in place, although this directive was lifted early Wednesday morning. Fortunately, the active flames appear to be less of a threat on campus, though fire personnel are still addressing a few spot fires and hot spots in the vicinity. As a precautionary measure, all schools within the Santa Monica-Malibu School District have been closed until Thursday.

Several road closures have also been enacted due to the fire. The California Highway Patrol has reported that the Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Kanan Dume Road, along with other significant closures affecting various routes in the area.

To assist those displaced by the fire, a shelter has been established at the Palisade Recreation Center in Pacific Palisades, and pet accommodations are available. Additionally, shelters for both small and large animals have been organized at Agoura Animal Care Center and Pierce College, respectively.

This situation underscores the importance of community preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. As firefighters continue their efforts to contain the blaze and protect residents, there is hope that with collaboration and support, affected communities will recover and rebuild stronger than before.

Summary: The Franklin Fire in Malibu has grown to nearly 4,000 acres and is only 7% contained, leading to mandatory evacuations and school closures. Emergency shelters have been set up for affected residents and their pets, while fire crews work to manage the situation. Hope remains for a united community recovery as efforts continue.
