In Frankfurt, the revelry of New Year’s Eve is accompanied by strict regulations regarding the use of fireworks. The city has implemented specific restrictions on where firecrackers and rockets can be used, aiming to ensure safety and protect sensitive areas.

Fireworks are prohibited in the city center, notably at the popular locations such as Zeil and the Eiserner Steg, as announced by the city through an administrative order earlier this month. Furthermore, these restrictions extend to other parts of the city, aligning with the federal First Ordinance on the Explosives Act, which prohibits the use of pyrotechnics in the immediate vicinity of churches, hospitals, as well as children’s and senior centers. A 200-meter radius around these facilities, along with fire-sensitive structures like half-timbered houses, the Frankfurt Zoo, and the city forest, is also off-limits for fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

The Frankfurt Zoo has issued a strong appeal to residents to adhere to these fireworks bans. The organization emphasizes that beyond safety concerns, the well-being of animals is at stake. The loud noises and sudden flashes from fireworks can cause severe stress and panic among the zoo’s inhabitants. Last year, the zoo employed a fire watch to mitigate risks, and they are encouraging locals to refrain from using fireworks in nearby streets and courtyards to minimize disturbances.

Additionally, fireworks are prohibited in areas near the Frankfurt Airport for safety reasons. Specific regulations for the Eiserner Steg state that the ban will be in effect from December 31 at 8 PM until January 1, 2026, at 3 AM. Fireworks of category F2 and higher will not be allowed within this timeframe, along with restrictions on carrying containers larger than three liters.

As New Year’s Eve approaches, Frankfurt’s residents are reminded of these regulations designed to enhance public safety and protect both people and animals, promoting a more peaceful celebration.
