Frank Ragnow Returns to Lions, Stoking Playoff Hopes

Frank Ragnow’s brief retirement has taken an unexpected turn as he announces his return to the Detroit Lions, just months after stepping away from the game. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the All-Pro center is rejoining the team as they aim for a spot in the NFC playoffs. Ragnow had initially retired in June due to ongoing injury concerns.

Sources reported to ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Ragnow’s decision to return stems from his deep passion for football. The Lion’s franchise drafted him 20th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft from Arkansas, and since then, he has made a significant impact in the league, accumulating four Pro Bowl selections and three Second-team All-Pro honors over seven seasons.

Despite his success, Ragnow’s career has been marred by injuries. He endured a season-ending torn plantar plate in his left foot in 2021 and has struggled with toe, knee, and ankle injuries in 2023. His Instagram post announcing his retirement highlighted the toll these injuries had taken on his ability to perform, where he expressed the difficulty of prioritizing his health and family.

While there were indications earlier this season that Ragnow’s return might not be on the horizon, head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged in November that the situation was evolving. With Ragnow back in the fold, the Lions hope to bolster their offensive line and enhance their playoff aspirations as they push forward in the season.

Ragnow’s return not only brings veteran leadership back to the field but also signals his undying love for the sport. Fans and teammates alike are likely to welcome him back with open arms, eager to see what he will contribute to the team’s success. This resurgence is a testament to resilience and determination, showing that athletes can overcome significant challenges to pursue their dreams.
