Frank Ragnow Leaves NFL: A Heartfelt Goodbye at Just 29

Frank Ragnow, the Pro Bowl center for the Detroit Lions, has announced his retirement from the NFL after seven seasons, citing ongoing health issues stemming from recurring injuries. Ragnow shared the news via Instagram, revealing the emotional struggle he faced in making this decision.

In his heartfelt message, Ragnow expressed the difficulty of accepting that his football career is concluding, stating, “These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing his health and his family’s future amidst the challenges posed by his injuries.

Drafted in the first round out of Arkansas in 2018, Ragnow enjoyed a successful career, notably making the Pro Bowl four times, including last season when he managed to play in 16 games despite struggling with injuries to his toe, knee, and ankle. His foot problems began in 2021 when he tore the plantar plate in his left foot, which led to numerous health challenges over the years, culminating in him calling his toe injury inoperable earlier this year.

At just 29 years old, Ragnow’s retirement leaves a significant gap in the Lions’ offensive line. Tate Ratledge, a promising second-round pick from Georgia, has been taking first-team reps at center in Ragnow’s absence and is viewed as a leading candidate to fill the position moving forward. Ratledge brings valuable experience, having been a three-year starter at right guard in college.

Ragnow expressed his deep gratitude towards the Lions organization and its fans, noting, “The Lions organization has been absolutely incredible throughout this process… It was an absolute honor going to battle for you all.”

This decision marks the end of a noteworthy chapter for Ragnow, who leaves behind a legacy of dedication and talent on the field. As he focuses on his health and new endeavors, fans and teammates alike will remember his contributions to the team.

This situation, while difficult for the Lions, opens up opportunities for emerging talent like Ratledge, potentially leading to a fresh and dynamic offensive line in the years to come.
