The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco is now approaching its closing arguments stage in the Dominican Republic, with a three-judge panel set to potentially announce its verdict soon. Franco, 24, faces serious charges including sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a minor, and human trafficking connected to a relationship he allegedly had with a girl who was 14 years old when their relationship began in December 2022.
Franco has not played for the Rays since the allegations surfaced in August 2023. After leaving court recently, he expressed his belief that the case is “in God’s hands” and emphasized his trust in the judicial process, stating, “I understand that they are doing their job; all we want is justice.” Franco expressed regret over not being able to participate in baseball, which he refers to as what he knows and misses the most.
His legal team has presented evidence intended to support his defense, including a letter from the minor’s father retracting the complaint and private testimony from the minor claiming no relationship with Franco. Additionally, the mother of the minor is facing charges of sexual exploitation and money laundering, accused of being compensated by Franco.
Franco’s attorney, Teodosio Jáquez, reiterated the defense’s position, stating that there is no substantial evidence against Franco beyond social media allegations. He cautioned that it would be unjust if Franco’s promising future were compromised solely based on online comments.
On the prosecution’s side, they assert that they have “conclusive evidence” to support their claims against Franco, with their findings expected to be presented following the closing arguments. According to Dominican legal practices, verdicts can be announced along with sentences, with a rationale provided later.
Once the Dominican judicial process concludes, Major League Baseball will carry out its investigation to determine if Franco will face any disciplinary actions, noting that a guilty verdict is not a prerequisite for suspension. Until then, Franco is on MLB’s restricted list and has not been compensated for his $8 million salary due to legal issues that have also hindered his ability to secure a visa.
