A Paris court has sentenced an Algerian woman, Dahbia Benkired, to life imprisonment for the brutal rape, torture, and murder of 12-year-old Lola Daviet. This case, which unfolded three years ago, sparked outrage across France and heightened anti-immigrant sentiments.
At 27 years old, Benkired has become the first woman in France to receive a life sentence, the most severe punishment available under French law since the abolition of capital punishment in 1981. Such sentences have been exceptionally rare, typically reserved for the most heinous crimes, including cases involving notorious figures like serial killer Michel Fourniret and Salah Abdeslam, a pivotal figure in the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks.
Lola’s tragic murder, particularly her disfigured body discovered in a trunk outside her home in northeastern Paris, sent shockwaves throughout the nation. At the time of the crime on October 14, 2022, Benkired was in financial distress and partly residing with her sister in the same building where Lola’s parents served as caretakers. She lured the young girl to her apartment, where the horrific acts were perpetrated, culminating in the suffocation of Lola with duct tape.
