Former Telecom Fiji Board Member Pleads Not Guilty in $766k Contract Probe

Sanjay Kaba, a former board member of Telecom Fiji Ltd (TFL) and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings, has pleaded not guilty to charges related to obtaining a financial advantage exceeding $700,000. During a court session with Magistrate Charles Ratakele in Suva, Mr. Kaba’s bail was extended while the alleged misconduct was addressed further.

The charges against Kaba stem from accusations that he, through his company Houng Lee Kaba Jacob Ltd (HLK Jacob), submitted a proposal to provide project management services for TFL’s new office and data center project. It is alleged that between June 2022 and July 2023, he obtained a total of $766,327.22 while not disclosing his directorship in HLK Jacob, a situation that allegedly rendered his company ineligible for the contract due to a clear conflict of interest.

This case is significant within the context of ongoing efforts by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to combat financial misconduct and promote transparency in corporate governance. Previous actions have emphasized the necessity of ethical conduct among leaders, particularly in public positions.

The legal proceedings have been scheduled to continue on November 11, during which the outcome of the allegations will be determined. As the case progresses, there remains hope for a resolution that reinforces accountability and enhances public trust in governance practices. The emphasis on transparency and ethical integrity serves as a reminder to stakeholders of the importance of maintaining high standards in leadership as Fiji addresses issues of corruption and governance.
