Former Nauru President Ludwig Derangadage Scotty has passed away at the age of 77 after a brief illness. The Nauru government confirmed his death on Wednesday, stating that he was surrounded by family at the time.

A state funeral is planned, with further details expected to be announced later this week. Scotty was a significant figure in Nauruan politics, dedicating over three decades to public service. He first entered the parliament in 1983, representing the constituencies of Anabar, Ijuw, and Anibare—a position he held for much of his distinguished career.

Scotty served as Nauru’s president on two occasions: first from May to August 2003, and then from June 2004 until December 2007. His presidency was marked by a strong focus on economic reforms aimed at addressing the financial challenges faced by the nation. Remarkably, he was the first president in Nauru’s history to separate the presidency from the role of foreign minister.

Throughout his career, he also held multiple terms as Speaker of Parliament from 2000 to 2011, in addition to various ministerial roles, including Health and Justice. He leaves behind a legacy and is survived by his wife and seven children. The announcement of his passing has evoked tributes from across the country, reflecting on his contributions to the nation and his dedication to the people of Nauru.
