UConn women’s basketball guard Kayleigh Heckel and Michigan’s Syla Swords exemplify friendship both on and off the court, even as they prepare to face each other in a highly anticipated matchup. The game, featuring the top-ranked Huskies against the sixth-ranked Wolverines, is part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun. Their former coach, Christina Raiti, humorously anticipates that their camaraderie may even lead to a warm hug during warmups instead of the expected competitive banter.
Heckel and Swords were teammates at Long Island Lutheran (LuHi) in Brookville, New York, from 2022 to 2024. Although they previously faced off in a collegiate matchup when Heckel was at USC, this reunion carries significant weight as both players have stepped into pivotal roles for their respective teams. Raiti recalls the fierce competitiveness of the two, stating that they’re both incredibly talented athletes who have an unwavering support for each other.
Heckel, who has quickly become a vital contributor for the Huskies since transferring, appears to fit seamlessly into the dynamic of UConn’s championship-winning roster. Raiti noted the challenges Heckel faced in adapting to a more collaborative playing style after transitioning from a program where she was the standout star. There were doubts about her fit at LuHi, particularly as she joined alongside talented players like five-star prospect Kate Koval. However, Raiti emphasized Heckel’s willingness to adapt and learn, traits she developed early on in her high school career.
The 2024 season proved remarkable for Heckel, whose selflessness on the court has only amplified at UConn. Averaging eight points, two assists, and 2.8 steals per game, she’s demonstrated her ability to create opportunities for her teammates, particularly feeding sharpshooter Azzi Fudd.
Swords, ranked fourth in her class, is also thriving for Michigan, averaging 12.2 points along with 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a balanced Wolverines lineup. Heckel expressed excitement about competing against Swords, recognizing her growth as a versatile player since their high school days.
Raiti will be present at the game, cheering for both of her former players, personifying the pride she feels in watching them achieve success at the collegiate level. She believes that despite the competition, the strong relationships forged during their time together at LuHi will always remain.
This matchup not only highlights individual skills but also showcases the camaraderie and shared history between these two outstanding athletes, promising an exciting and emotionally charged game. Their journey from high school teammates to collegiate competitors serves as a testament to their dedication and love for the game.
