The Los Angeles Lakers have seen another of their former players quickly transition to a new team shortly after being released. Christian Koloko, a center who previously suited up for the Lakers, has signed a 10-day hardship contract with the Memphis Grizzlies, according to reported insights from ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Koloko, who was drafted 33rd overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, began his career with the Toronto Raptors before joining the Lakers for the last season and part of the current one. His time with Los Angeles, however, was limited, culminating in his release on November 25. During his tenure with the Lakers, Koloko averaged 2.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game across 37 outings in the previous season, and he managed to play just two games this year, logging only six minutes without scoring.

Before entering the NBA, Koloko excelled at the University of Arizona, where he was known for his shot-blocking prowess, averaging 2.8 blocks per game in his final college season. His performance earned him recognition, especially as he contributed to Arizona’s Pac-12 conference championship during a season filled with NBA-caliber players.

While Koloko’s professional opportunities have been limited thus far, he has a chance to earn more significant playing time with the Grizzlies, who are currently dealing with a stretched roster due to injuries among their big men.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have started the season on a positive note, currently sitting fourth in the Western Conference standings with a record of 19-8. The trio of LeBron James, Luka Doncic, and Austin Reaves has been crucial to their offensive output, though their time on the court together has been hampered by injuries. James missed the initial month of the season due to sciatica, and Reaves has been sidelined with a calf strain since a recent loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Doncic also suffered a leg contusion during a recent game against the Clippers and may be out for upcoming matchups, including the anticipated Christmas Day game against the Houston Rockets.

Despite these setbacks, the Lakers have shown resilience and continue to perform well, depending on James to lead the charge as the team navigates through its injury challenges.
