Former Fiji Pearls Coach Unaisi Rokoura tragically drowned during a freshwater mussel collecting trip at Navuso Agriculture School. The police reported that the incident occurred yesterday morning, when Rokoura, along with two women, was swept underwater by strong currents. Witnesses noted seeing a 34-year-old woman struggling to hold onto Rokoura before they both disappeared beneath the waves.
Authorities have since recovered the body of the woman who was with her, and it is currently at Mokani morgue. The search for Rokoura’s remains continues as rescue teams work diligently to locate her body.
This incident underscores the pressing need for heightened awareness regarding water safety, particularly in regions with strong currents. It mirrors previous tragedies in Fiji where drowning has become a significant concern; the nation recorded 53 drowning deaths this year, marking an increase compared to the previous year. Such incidents serve as a poignant reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the importance of taking necessary precautions when engaging in water activities.
As the community mourns the loss of both Rokoura and the woman involved, there remains a collective hope for unity and resilience. Fueled by shared grief, communities can come together to promote safer practices and support each other in times of tragedy. Through these efforts, there is potential for fostering increased awareness around water safety and preventing future incidents.
