Former Fiji 7s player William Ryder, currently involved with the Uso Tasi club in the Solomon Islands, has expressed enthusiasm about competing in the upcoming Super Seven 7s tournament, set to take place in December at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka. This event serves as a qualifying tournament for the prestigious 2026 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s.
The tournament director, Randall Kamea, revealed that Uso Tasi is the only overseas club that has shown interest in participating so far. To foster the competitive spirit, the first 24 teams that submit their registration fees of $1,000 will secure a spot. The top seven teams from this tournament will then earn a direct qualification to the Coral Coast 7s scheduled for January, where they will compete for a substantial prize pool of $50,000.
As of now, registrations remain open and are set to close on November 6. Notably, there is also excitement around the participation of local clubs, with some already stepping forward to pay for multiple teams to take part in the event. The Super Seven 7s tournament is a crucial opportunity for teams to showcase their talent and aspire to greater challenges in the rugby world.
The Coral Coast 7s, considered a highlight in the rugby calendar, will also feature a mix of local and international teams, including prestigious sides from New Zealand and Samoa. This blend of talent is expected to elevate the tournament’s profile and contribute to the growing reputation of rugby sevens in the Pacific.
As rugby continues to foster community spirit and international camaraderie, events like these are not only instrumental for the teams involved but also for fans who eagerly await thrilling displays of athleticism and sportsmanship. The upcoming tournaments provide a hopeful platform for emerging talent, ensuring the vibrant future of rugby in the region.
