A former mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, is facing serious allegations as her sex crimes trial begins. Misty Clanton Roberts, 43, has been charged with carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a minor, stemming from accusations that she engaged in sexual relations with a minor while in office. Roberts has pleaded not guilty to all charges, with her defense attorney, Adam Johnson, asserting her innocence and emphasizing the importance of the presumption of innocence in the legal system.

During opening statements, prosecutor Charles Robinson revealed that the investigation into Roberts uncovered what he described as a “lewd” photo and text messages exchanged between Roberts and the mother of the alleged victim. The prosecutor highlighted that the messages indicated the mother had contacted Roberts to confirm whether her son might have gotten her pregnant, to which Roberts responded that she was on birth control. The evidence also includes testimony from a driver who reportedly delivered Plan B contraception to Roberts’ home.

Roberts’ defense attorney criticized the origins of the allegations, stating that law enforcement only became aware of the situation through social media, suggesting that rumors may have distorted the facts. Johnson claimed that the alleged victim did not initially acknowledge any wrongdoing, suggesting he began to embrace the narrative after a breakup with his girlfriend and as rumors spread.

The trial comes on the heels of a previous mistrial, following Roberts’ resignation from the mayoral position shortly before her arrest in 2024. Notably, she made history as the first female mayor of DeRidder and was serving her second term after winning reelection in 2022.

As the proceedings continue, both the prosecution and defense have laid out their contrasting narratives. The trial is expected to proceed through the weekend, allowing jurors to evaluate the evidence and testimonies presented in this significant case involving both personal and public implications for the former mayor and the community.

This case underscores issues of trust and accountability in public office, as it unfolds in the courtroom in front of a community keenly aware of the circumstances surrounding it.
