Former Boston Celtics star Tony Allen has been arrested in Arkansas on drug possession charges, according to police reports. Allen was stopped by Poinsett County sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday while traveling on Interstate 555 near Payneway.

During the traffic stop, officers detected a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, prompting them to ask both Allen and the driver, William Hatton, to exit the car. A search of Allen revealed a package of marijuana, while further inspection of the vehicle uncovered various items of drug paraphernalia. Among these items was a cigarette box containing a clear plastic wrapper that tested positive for cocaine.

Allen and Hatton now face charges related to the possession of methamphetamine or cocaine as well as marijuana. Additionally, Hatton has been charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and improper lane change. Both individuals were subsequently taken to the Poinsett County Detention Center for processing.

Payneway is located approximately 43 miles from Memphis, Tennessee, where Allen played a significant portion of his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies after his six seasons with the Celtics, highlighted by a championship win in 2008.

While this incident marks a troubling turn for the former player, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges that many athletes face after leaving the spotlight, with some struggling to adjust to life outside of professional sports. This situation underscores the importance of support systems in helping former athletes navigate their post-career lives.
