Ford is recalling a total of 273,789 vehicles, including 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators, due to a brake line defect affecting models from 2022 to 2024. This issue primarily arises during the assembly process; specifically, the front brake line may have been inadvertently bent during engine installation, leading it to contact the engine air cleaner outlet pipe. This contact can potentially result in a brake line leak, which significantly jeopardizes braking performance due to reduced fluid levels or air entering the brake system.
While the number of affected vehicles seems substantial, it’s estimated that only about 1% of these SUVs may actually have the defect. Owners of these vehicles should be vigilant for signs of trouble, such as an increased brake pedal travel or feel. If left unaddressed, a brake line leak could lead to a drained master cylinder and illuminate the brake warning light.
Ford plans to send notification letters to affected vehicle owners by the end of May, outlining steps for inspection at local dealerships. For those who have already paid for repairs related to this issue, reimbursement is available.
This recall is part of Ford’s commitment to safety, despite previous recalls, such as one in 2020 where 39,000 vehicles were affected due to fire risks, resulting in multiple incidents. Overall, Ford’s proactive approach to rectify these issues reflects its efforts to enhance vehicle safety and protect consumers.
This situation serves as an important reminder for vehicle owners to stay informed about recalls, ensuring their safety on the road.
