Every Thursday, I will provide a preview of the upcoming week in college football with my feature titled “Three by Three.” I will highlight three intriguing aspects of the Mizzou matchup, the SEC, and college football across the country. Expect to see some lesser-known storylines alongside the usual big names like Georgia and Ohio State.
Missouri vs. Murray State — 7 PM Thursday on SECN
Dominant Defensive Line
When a premier team faces an FCS opponent, the focus often shifts to team performance rather than individual contests that could shape future conference clashes. However, I will be looking to see how Missouri’s revamped defensive line exerts dominance on Thursday. They need to not just perform well, but truly overwhelm Murray State. With key players like Darius Robinson moved on to the NFL and significant changes to the tackle rotation, this unit is undergoing a major transformation. I’m particularly curious about Corey Batoon’s utilization of Johnny Walker Jr. and Joe Moore at boundary defensive end, especially since they’re expected to take on more coverage duties. I’ll also be watching young talents like Marquis Gracial, Williams Nwaneri, and Jakhai Lang. If the Tigers are to replicate last season’s success, it begins with controlling the line of scrimmage on Thursday night.
Replacing Stars
This matchup officially marks the transition from last season’s team. The stars from last year will remain in our memories, but they are no longer part of the game program. I am eager to see new players seize their chance. Nate Noel has the potential to become a fan favorite due to his explosive speed, adding a new dynamic to the offense. I look forward to seeing Marcus Bryant face tough pass rushers and Triston Newson and Khalil Jacobs wreak havoc as linebackers. Of course, Blake Craig has big shoes to fill as he steps up as the new kicker in place of the legendary Thiccer Kicker. While familiar faces remain, I’m excited for the new talent to win over the crowd tonight.
Touchdown Luther Burden
While the excitement for new players is palpable, there’s no denying the anticipation surrounding Luther Burden. As we approach the culmination of his career at Mizzou, every opportunity to see him play becomes more precious. His talent is a major asset for the program, and I expect the coaching staff to create opportunities for him to enhance his stats. Winning is the primary objective, but a standout performance from Luther that garners national recognition later in the season is also vital. That journey starts tonight, and I look forward to seeing the impact he makes.
In the SEC
Clemson vs. Georgia – 11 AM Saturday on ABC
This week features a limited number of captivating Power Five matchups, with four involving SEC teams. Even after recent expansion moves in the Big Ten, the SEC continues to lead with the top games across all three time slots. This matchup showcases two of the three active coaches who have won national championships. While Georgia is loaded with talent, Clemson also boasts a strong roster, including powerful defensive tackle Peter Woods, who will aim to disrupt Carson Beck and the Bulldogs’ offense.
Miami at Florida – 2:30 PM Saturday on ABC
Florida head coach Billy Napier is under pressure as his seat grows increasingly warm due to a challenging SEC schedule and tough non-conference games against in-state rivals. The Gators must secure a solid start against Miami to avoid fervent criticism from fans. Miami has invested heavily in NIL and the transfer portal and will launch Cam Ward as their quarterback. Depending on the outcome, at least one fan base will likely be disappointed by Saturday evening.
Notre Dame at Texas A&M – 6:30 PM Saturday on ABC
With Notre Dame’s offensive line facing numerous injuries, they will enter their season opener relying on players originally slated for backup roles. This poses a significant challenge against Texas A&M’s fierce defensive front. The Aggies, now led by coach Mike Elko, hope to silence critics who view them as all talk without action. The matchup promises to be physical with two strong defenses and offenses that are still refining their strategies.
Around the Nation
North Dakota State at Colorado – 7 PM Thursday on ESPN
This game pits Colorado’s high-octane offense against North Dakota State’s rugged play style. However, it’s worth noting that Colorado tempoed down considerably after Pat Shurmer took over as offensive coordinator last season, playing nearly 17 snaps per game slower. This shift will be crucial as the Buffaloes face a physically tough Bison squad that remains competitive in FCS. Will North Dakota State challenge Colorado’s top-heavy lineup?
Boise State at Georgia Southern – 3 PM Saturday on ESPNU
It wouldn’t be complete without a mention of an exciting Sun Belt matchup. Historical mid-major powers, Boise State and Georgia Southern, clash in a game expected to feature plenty of scoring. Boise is a favorite to claim a Group of Five playoff spot, despite surprising many by starting unheralded Maddux Madson at quarterback instead of the highly-rated USC transfer, Malachi Nelson. Regardless, Boise should have no problem putting points on the board against a lackluster Georgia Southern defense. This matchup also features two underrated running backs, Boise’s Ashton Jeanty and Georgia Southern’s Jalen White.
Boston College at Florida State – 6:30 PM Monday on ESPN
I’m intrigued by both teams in this face-off. Florida State aims to recover after a tough loss in Week Zero. The team has strong defensive and offensive line depth, but their linebacker unit showed weaknesses. The offensive line has experience, but the run game struggled to find its rhythm. DJ Uiagalelei will need to deliver consistent performances to keep Florida State competitive. This bounce-back effort starts Monday night against upcoming opponent Boston College, which possesses a dynamic scrambling quarterback in Thomas Castellanos and a veteran defensive front.
