Weather interrupted the opening day of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland, with fog delays limiting playing time and only eight groups able to complete 18 holes.
Matt Fitzpatrick, a two-time Swiss winner and a regular on Europe’s Ryder Cup radar, sits three under par after 15 holes, two off the early pace set by Richard Mansell and Ivan Cantero. Fitzpatrick’s day has kept him in the mix as he eyes a potential fourth appearance for Europe.
The leaders turned in five under after 15 holes. Mansell produced six birdies and one bogey in a 65, while Cantero added an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to join him at the top. Also in contention after 13 holes were home favourite Ronan Kleu and South African Richard Sterne in a three-way tie for third, a stroke ahead of Guido Migliozzi, who had signed for a 66.
Others were stymied by the fog. Aaron Rai, Matt Wallace and several others could not start, while Alex Noren, Nicolai Hojgaard and Wallace were unable to begin their rounds. Noren, fresh off a British Masters win, is the highest-ranked European in the field and among the favourites for a strong run, with Nicolai Hojgaard aiming to back up his runner-up finish at the Belfry and join his twin brother Rasmus in Europe’s team. Rai and Wallace are chasing rookie Ryder Cup appearances.
The fog disruptions add an extra layer of intrigue as players work to adapt to the evolving conditions and the late start times. Luke Donald will later name his six captain’s picks, a decision that shapes Europe’s Ryder Cup plans as the season progresses.
Outlook: With the weather pushing back rounds, Friday’s action will be critical for those at the top of the leaderboard and those hoping to make a late surge. Fitzpatrick remains a notable threat for a win and for his Ryder Cup aspirations, while Noren, the Hojgaard brothers and the other European contenders will look to capitalize on any momentum before the weekend. The Omega European Masters will continue to unfold with live coverage continuing as conditions permit.
