FNU’s First Alumni Ball Aims to Fund Scholarships in Fiji

The Fiji National University (FNU) recently held its inaugural grand alumni fundraiser ball, which aims to provide scholarships for students from underprivileged backgrounds. This event underscores the university’s commitment to ensuring accessible education for all Fijian children, regardless of economic status. Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba, alongside President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and other esteemed guests, highlighted the significance of such initiatives in promoting educational equity.

Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasized that the national university should not be exclusive to those who can afford it, expressing a profound commitment to “leveling the playing field” for all aspiring students. Although FNU was formally established just 15 years ago, its constituent colleges have served Fiji and the Pacific region for nearly 500 years, underscoring its longstanding impact on education.

The fundraiser welcomed key figures such as Chief Guest Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, who stressed the importance of education and the role financial support plays in transforming lives. As patron of the FNU Foundation, Ratu Wiliame articulated how the foundation acts as a bridge between generosity and opportunity, ensuring that financial hardship does not impede personal academic pursuits. He called for contributions not as mere donations but as investments in human potential, breaking the cycles of poverty and hardening futures for generations to come.

This event aligns with FNU’s broader goals, as evidenced by previous launches and initiatives such as the FNU Foundation, designed to mitigate educational barriers by offering scholarships and support services. The foundation has pioneered programs like the Coffee Forward Initiative and Veilomoni Closet to address financial needs relating to food and professional attire for students facing hardships.

Collectively, these efforts pave the way for a more equitable education landscape in Fiji, providing a brighter future and the empowerment of Fijian youth through learning opportunities. The fundraiser illustrates the power of community collaboration and the pivotal role of education in fostering personal and societal growth. Such a focus on uplifting the educational prospects for underprivileged students reflects a positive and hopeful trajectory for the region’s future.
