Fiji National University (FNU) Vice-Chancellor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba has announced that the transition of the university to operate under the Office of the Prime Minister, specifically within the Ministry of Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, was a request made by the institution itself. In a message to FNU staff and students, Professor Nabobo-Baba emphasized that the decision was carefully planned and not an imposition.

“This move was requested by the University,” she stated, clarifying that formal discussions on the realignment began on August 10, 2024. She emphasized that this shift from the Ministry of Education reflects the university’s expanding national role and responsibilities. The vice-chancellor expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the Ministry of Strategic Planning for their support in facilitating this transition.

Professor Nabobo-Baba also recognized the contributions of the FNU Council, including its chair and members, for their ongoing support throughout the process. This transition aims to better align the university with its growing responsibilities on the national stage, allowing it to enhance its contribution to Fiji’s development.

Overall, this change marks a significant step for Fiji National University in strengthening its position and capabilities to serve the nation’s educational needs effectively.
