A building at the Fiji National University’s Labasa Campus, located in the Naiyaca subdivision, has been deemed unsafe following assessments by qualified architects and engineers. FNU Vice-Chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba confirmed that due to safety concerns, the structure has been cordoned off, and using it is no longer an option.
The cost of demolishing the unsafe building is estimated to be around $3 million. Instead of proceeding with demolition at this time, the university is directing resources towards developing new classroom facilities. Currently, the largest class in Labasa comprises approximately 60 students, and the new classrooms being constructed will create a comfortable environment for them.
Professor Nabobo-Baba noted that three classrooms have already been completed, with aspirations to have six ready by the start of the next semester. The old building is now classified in certain areas as red zones, indicating they are off-limits due to safety issues.
Looking ahead, Professor Nabobo-Baba expressed hope that, with adequate funding and expert guidance, the old building might be rehabilitated for future use, potentially for cultural and arts exhibitions or as a library. She emphasized the university’s commitment to providing safe and modern learning spaces for the students in Labasa, reflecting a positive dedication to educational improvement despite the challenges presented by the old structure.
