Flying Fijians icon Joeli Veitayaki dies at 58

The Fijian rugby community is mourning the unexpected death of former Flying Fijians prop Joeli Veitayaki, who passed away at the age of 58. His daughter, Talei Veitayaki, shared the heartbreaking news via social media, describing her father’s passing as a profound shock for the family. She further expressed that her father was a gentle giant with a big heart, deeply loved by many and significantly impactful in his community.

Veitayaki, who hailed from Matuku, Lau, began his international career with Fiji against the New Zealand Maori in 1994. He was a veteran player, participating in the Rugby World Cups of 1999 and 2003, and he made a total of 49 appearances for the Flying Fijians, during which he scored three tries. His club career included stints with the Blues, Northland, and the Irish club Ulster.

This tragic loss resonates particularly in light of the recent bereavement within the Fijian rugby family, as just days prior, the community was grieving the passing of rising star Josaia Raisuqe who tragically died in an accident at a train crossing in France. Raisuqe, much like Veitayaki, was known for his contributions to the sport as well as his warm spirit and significant community involvement. Such losses remind the rugby community of the deep bonds and support that exist among players and their families.

As the family prepares for funeral arrangements, they have requested privacy during this difficult time, allowing them to come together to cope with their loss. Veitayaki leaves behind a legacy of sportsmanship, dedication, and community focus that will certainly inspire future generations of rugby players in Fiji. His son, Haereti Hetet, is currently part of the national squad, carrying forward the family’s rugby legacy.

The collective spirit of remembrance and support within the rugby community serves as a poignant reminder of the impact these players had not only on the field but also in their communities and among their loved ones.
