The head coach of the Fiji Water Flying Fijians, Mick Byrne, is focused on ensuring a fully fit squad as they prepare for the 2025 Autumn Internationals. His commitment comes after the announcement that Kitione Salawa, Joji Nasova, and Setareki Tuicuvu have been added to the team as replacements for injured players Lekima Tagitagivalu, Iosefo Masi, and Ponipate Loganimasi. Byrne emphasized the need for the squad to start the tour with players who are in peak physical condition, noting that the withdrawn players may not be ready until late November.
Byrne made the decision to withdraw the injured athletes last Saturday to prevent disruptions to the team’s preparation efforts. He expressed that while the overall impact on the team might be minimal, the individual players will feel significant disappointment from missing this opportunity. “The initial response was that they could possibly be right by the tour,” he stated, reflecting on the unexpected nature of injuries.
One of the new additions to the squad, Joji Nasova, previously made an impression during his debut at the Pacific Nations Cup earlier this year. Byrne sees great potential in Nasova, asserting that he has the skills and mindset required to excel in the international rugby arena. “Joji showed a lot of promise in PNC. We feel that while it’s an opportunity for Joji to come in and grow, he can build on what he learned and take another step forward,” Byrne noted.
The Flying Fijians have touched down in England and commenced training, officially beginning their preparations for their first match against England on November 9 at Twickenham Stadium. This autumn tour represents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Flying Fijians to showcase their resilience and depth in talent, highlighting the strategic focus on nurturing new talents alongside experienced players.
As the team gears up for autumn encounters against formidable opponents, there is an aura of optimism within the camp. With hopes for impressive performances, the Flying Fijians are poised to make their mark in the international rugby scene, showcasing both their established talents and the potential of newcomers ready to rise to the occasion.
